Bapudeva Sastri was a Brahman
pandit who became the first professor of both Indian and western astronomy
. He was born on November 1, 1821, to a Brahmin family of Maharashtra. He received his early education in western arithmetic and algebra at the Marathi school in Nagpur. He also studied the Bijaganita
and lilavati
under Dhundiraja Misra.
Noting his talent the Britih political agent Lancelot Wilkinson secured his admission to the Sehore sanskrit school where he studied Siddhanta Siromani, Euclidean Geometry and European science in general under Pandit Sevarama and Wilkinson himself. In 1842 Sastri went to Benares Sanskrit College where he taught rekha-ganita(Euclidean Geometry).
He translated the Siddhanta Shiromani
, (a treatise on Hindu astronomy written in the twelfth century by Bhaskaracharya) and published it in Benares in 1891. With Lancelot Wilkinson, Sastri wrote The Surya Siddhanta, or an Ancient System of Hindu Astronomy.
