Known primarily for his contributions to the progress of semiotics in the field of Hispanic philology, he has been the promoter of the International Conference on Semiotics and Hispanism (Madrid, 1983), first president of the Spanish Association of Semiotics (1983–1987), member of the executive committee of the International Association for Semiotic Studies (1983–1998), member from 1999 to 2001 of the International Committee of Experts in charge of the Italian Encyclopedia—comprising Hans Georg Gadamer, Bronisław Geremek, Geoffrey Lloyd
, D. Ponnau, Paul Poupard, Jacques Revel and Peter Stein
—and president of the Spanish Association of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature (2001–2005).
He is current director of the "Curso de Alta Especialización en Filología Hispánica", the largest master’s program of its kind, with the most important faculty in the field. He also heads the network of scholars who have graduated from this course and who currently work in universities in 25 countries, including USA, Europe, Latin America and Asia
. He is General Director of the Chair "Dámaso Alonso", for the cooperation between European and American universities, and is director of the Division of Culture of the Obra Pía de los Pizarro Foundation.
He is a member of the supervisory body of 20 Spanish and international journals and is the director of the bibliographic collections Teoría de la Literatura y de la Literatura Comparada (Madrid, Síntesis), Lenguaje e Iberoamérica (Madrid, Mapfre) and Anejos de Revista de Literatura (Madrid, CSIC). He has also been director for thirty years (1980–2010) of the Revista de Literatura of CSIC and is currently editor of the Nueva Revista de Política, Cultura y Arte (Madrid). He is also correspondent member of the Academia Argentina de Letras, of the Academia Chilena de la Lengua
and of the Academia Nacional de Letras del Uruguay.
