For better administrative control and improved development and operational reasons, the Railway Board approved the creation of a new Railway Division with Salem as headquarters in 2005 to improve railway infrastructure, facilities (lacking since several decades) and introduce better train services, thus satisfying the long felt needs of railway passengers in and around surrounding areas and thereby providing better conveniences to rail travelers.  lines, and only small section are meter gauge lines. The main improvements currently in this railway zone are to convert all lines to broad gauge, improvement of stations, platform covering, better catering stalls and an automated signaling system to avoid accidents.

The Chennai Central station handles a million passengers every day. Nine stations namely Chennai (Egmore), Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram have been scheduled for upgrading. Chennai Central, Ernakulam Junction Trivandrum Central and Calicut railway stations are being upgraded to world class standards.

Timeline and Key Events

1845: (May 8), Madras Railway Company was launched.

1853: Madras Railway Company, registered in Chennai (Royapuram) Arcot (valaja Road) began work.

1856: June 1 Royapuram -valaja Road route in the South's first passenger rail service began. Perambur Courage loco workshop set up in Vaughan.

1861: Beypore - Tirur (Kozhikode) route commissioned . Great Southern Railway of India Tiruchirappalli nakapattinat up to 125 Km from the gauge set.

1862: Madras Railwat. Tramve for local transport company established in Chennai in India.

1864: jolarpettai- Bangalore-mail began service.

1865:

1868: Nagapattinam Tiruchirappalli route began service.

1872: Great Southern Railway of India Railway , In 1874 (SIR) renamed to South Indian Railway

1875: Nagapattinam Tiruchirappalli marrapattatu gauge to meter gauge. Meter gauge route from Trichy to Madurai for service been left open.

1879: French Government and the British Government and the meter gauge line between Pondicherry and Villupuram formed according to an agreement.
Bridge work to take the free train service began in Thanjavur, Chennai (previously up to take two trains from markat Activated)

1891: January utamaiyakkapttatu first South Indian railway officials. Nilgiri mountain railway has happened in the beginning.

1898: Mettupalayam kunnur service began. Olavakkode - Palakkad line constructed.

1899: Chennai-Vijayawada passenger service began. Boat Mail from Chennai enapatum Ceylon passenger ship with a connecting service between Tuticorin started.

1902: Kochi - Shornur set the path.

1904: Kollam - Thiruvananthapuram line constructed.

1907: Mangalore - Kozhikode line constructed.

1908 Chennai Egmore Railway Station was built.

1927: Shornur - Nilambur line constructed

1929: Chennai suburban railway service began.

1931: Chennai Beach to Tambaram meter gauge electric train service started in the finished work (discontinued in 2004, replaced by broad topic.

1934: Kochi - Shornur changed the path of the gauge.

1944: Marathon Madras, Southern Railway, South Indian Railway (SIR) associated with.

1997: Flying Mylapore, Chennai Beach Railway (MRTS) iyakkapattatu.

1998: Tambaram Tiruchirappalli (line card), Tiruchirapalli Tanjore opened gauge.

1999: (Jan 6) opened in Tiruchi broad gauge pad.

2002: Southern Railway, Bangalore and Mysore divisions separated from the South Western Railway uruvayrru new zone. Ernakulam, Thrissur, minmayam made.

2004: Mylapore in Chennai from the flying train directed to Thiruvanmiyur.

2005: The Nilgiri Mountain train platform declared UNESCO World Heritage.

2007: (Ogg 12) and then converted to broad gauge railway pampan first movement of the bridge.
(Nov 7), Trichy, Salem Division palakatu divisions formed from the split
Salem viruttacalam converted to broad gauge traffic began on November 18.
Mylapore Velachery Chennai flight path of the railway service was opened on November 19.
