Early life and education

Born on a farm near La Porte, Indiana, she moved to southern California

 with her family in 1908 and began art studies that year. She spent one year at the Otis Art Institute

Career

Thelma Hope became known primarily for her portraits and scenes from her world travels, as well as California and Hawaiian landscapes. She had two paintings displayed in the California Art Club

Thelma married FREDRIC PUTNAM HOPE. Art director at MGM; hired by Cedric Gibbons; died of aneurism after recovery from pneumonia in hospital circa 1936-7 when eldest child, Marcia, was 12 years old.

Three children of Thelma and Fredric:

STEPHEN HOPE: served in Air Force band in 50s. Dixieland band member. Music Editor for studios (Burbank) Lived in Hollywood Hills. Daughter, Stephanie, and son, Christian, Betty his wife (daughter of Portland OR sea captain.)

FREDRIC HOPE: brother of Marcia Ellen Hope and Stephen __Hope Fred Hope Served in Korean War designing bridges for the US Army. Married Diana Wheeler (daughter of Lyle Wheeler art director MGM and who used his many academy awards as doorstops, it is reported). They were childhood sweethearts (both their parents academy award art directors at MGM). Had 4 children: Freddie, Lisa, Burrr, and Heather (last two twins--boy and girl) Family raised in Manhattan Beach CA. Fred Hope art director helped design Pacific Ocean Park (POP) in Long Beach (part interest in one of rides), worked for numerous Disney projects; did art direction for various TV series. (TFJ)
