Laser hair removal has become a most popular choice for hair removal for both men and women, and as successful and as safe as these treatments may be, ultimate satisfaction is often based on proper skin care both before and after treatments. If you have been considering a visit to a Denver laser hair removal treatment center, first take some time to learn about some important things you can do to prepare your skin beforehand, and how to best care for it after your treatment.

Before

• Always come to your appointment with your skin “naked.” Do not apply any lotions, creams or moisturizers before you go. Even your favorite perfume should be left on the shelf for this day, as any type of product could interfere with the laser or cause possible unpleasant interactions. Sometimes a cooling gel is applied before treatment to make the procedure more comfortable, but this is done by the technician at the time of the procedure.

• Try to keep out of the sun right before treatment as sunburned or even overly tanned skin can be extra sensitive, and may even reduce the effectiveness of the laser, as laser hair removal works best when there is sufficient skin to hair contrast. Tanning can often reduce these levels of contrast. The best way to prepare for laser hair removal treatment is to shave the area that is going to be treated beforehand. Do not wax or tweeze the area as this may reduce the effectiveness of the laser treatment.

After

• Recovery time is minimal after laser hair removal. However, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise and heat for 24 hours after your treatment.

• The area of treatment can be cared for as usual with gentle cleansers or soaps. Try to avoid soaps that may dry the skin, but also well hydrated skin is essential to successful hair removal.

• It is quite normal for the skin to be slightly pink and perhaps even a tiny bit swollen after a laser hair removal treatment. This will fade in a short time, generally within 24 hours.

• To aid the skin's return to normal apply a gentle moisturizer as needed. Be sure to ask your clinician for a recommended product. Often the center will offer a gentle, appropriate lotion for purchase.

• Cold compresses can be applied to the area to reduce redness and swelling.

• Avoid over exposure to the sun right after treatment. Give the skin some time to return to normal before heading out to catch some rays; always apply sunscreen.

• Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Not only will this help your skin to heal quickly, it is imperative for healthy skin care.

Remember that it may take several treatments for the unwanted hair to be completely removed. Patience is an important element of laser hair removal success. You will likely go back four to six weeks later for your next appointment and continue until the hair is gone.
