I have a C172. Not an expert but a lot of experience.
Engines that sit around for extended periods tend to accumulate moisture hence create rust particles inside
the engine. The solution is to fly the airplane frequently
enough to raise the engine temperature for long enough
time to evaporate this moisture. Personally, I fly at least
10 hrs a month sometimes 15-20. Some folks seem to do OK
by flying 2 hrs. every other week. I have my oil analyzed
every year so I have an idea if I have an elevated reading
in one of the metals. Also, boroscope the engine once a year so you can see the cylinder wall ans Most important
the condition of the exhaust valve. Hope this helps,
maybe it's overkill but I have been flying singles for
a long time and Thank God never had a problem.
