Gothic architecture, as in gothic cathedrals, adopted 3 construction methods that made them possible to build.
1. The pointed arch. This type of arch transfered the stressline frome the sides to the ground, making it possible to build taller.
2. Flying Buttress: These were systems of half-arches that surrounded the cathedral in order to counter act the lateral forces created by the walls. This made it possible to decrease the width of the walls.
3. Rib vault: This was a ceiling form that utilized two intersecting arches to hold the weight of the roof.
Hope that helped!
