Breifly: The USA was not involved, France thought it was prepared, e.g.,the Maginot Line!!!, Bitain was re-arming fast but had been led into a sense of complacenty by Chamberalain, so that when hostilites commenced GB was underprepared.

It's a great question. Why weren't we as prepared as we should have been? It wouldn't have mattered at all in the case of France who would have been over powered by the might of the German army equipped with state of the art armoured equipment the like of which the world had never seen before. Had France fought on the agony and death toll would have been much higher for her.

And Britain, well we go on and on about Churchill and the resolve of the British "we shall defend our island whatever the cost may be..." and all that stuff, but the truth is the same fate as France would have awaited us if it wasn't for a small matter of a bit of water called the English Channel. Let us not kid ourselves about that! Hitler had no great appetite for such a seaborne landing, the Germans were land creatures who saw invasion as only a necessary last resort afer failing to get us to make peace.

Funnily enough Britain was a lot more prepared for Hitler's coming that history would have us believe. We had no problem at all churning out replacement Spitfires and Hurricanes like sausage machines, and if pilots were lacking over here there was always Poles Czechs Canadians and other Commonwealth young men spoiling for a fight in the air! If the Germans had had the forsight and planning of the British, they would have been over here make no mistake about that. Yes we were prepared as far as we could be, but we owe a huge debt of gratitude to a fat morphine addict called Herman and a bafoon called Adolf.

Going to war or even preparing for a war,is a most grave situation and needs enormous planning.Britain and America being democracy's have the people to answer too. Unlike a dictatorship, what ever the dictator wants the dictator gets.

Britain like America had a huge advantage over their European allies. Britain had 22 miles of water. America 2000 miles of sea. Taking an army across a sea/water with out control of the sea/water and air is impossible. As Corporal Hitler and Corporal Napoleon discovered.

In addition to the above. Bletchley Park,Britain had cracked the German Enigma code machine, and were listening to the German messages, going to and fro from Adolf and his Army,navy,Air-force commanders.
Britain also put out misinformation which was meant for German ears.listening stations picked up this misinformation, and passed it on to the high command.Information such as a Third Army being put together (it didn't exist) factories were flat out producing ammunition, tanks, planes, ships and so on, when in fact Britain were struggling to keep up with demand.
The Germans swallowed the bait and turned to Russia. The rest as they say is.. History..

Hitler and his chosen staff members had prepared for an invasion of the British mainland, But thankfully the counter intelligence and mis- information the British provided through the Enigma code turned the German High Command to the Eastern front and into a terrible conflict with the Russian Armies.....If the Non-Agression pact Hitler made with Stalin had been kept, The British Mainland would surely have been invaded by the German Armies,...It would have been a bloody and costly invasion for the German High Command.
