Shortly after receiving a B.A. in English, my mother asked me if I wanted to go to Mexico to study yoga. Mother was a devout devotee of Sathya Sai Baba. I thought yoga in Mexico would be fun, especially in a town called Tecate! Although I never had a yoga lesson in my life, I forced my body into the asanas. I went against yoga philosophy to pass the course (which turned out to be a teacher's course)! Indra Devi and her adopted daughter were not helpful to a beginner, but luckily, another teacher was more than happy to help me.
Except for stretching and breathing, I have given up yoga. It is a Hindu form of worship, and I am no longer a New Age Hindu. At Indra Devi's school I did meet some beautiful souls who were truly searching for God. They encouraged me to search for God, and I finally found Him four years ago.
I have returned to the Catholic Church. When I was still out in the wilderness seeking God, I thought I was an elementary level soul who could not accept herself as God. I have now accepted that I am no more God than Sai Baba or Indra Devi. Only God is God. It is not in yoga that we find God. We find God in prayer, Eucharistic devotion, Scripture reading and humility.
