The bridge in this picture looks like the Gattman bridge to me. When I was a child, that bridge and a two-mile strip of road across the "Gattman bottom" connected residents of the Mississippi community of Sipsey Fork, Lost Creek Community residents in Lamar County, Ala., and others to the village of Gattman and State Hwy. 278.

The bridge is no longer there and Monroe County, Miss., has pretty much closed the road: a choice which not only inconveniences the local residents and cuts them off from the volunteer fire department services in Gattman but it curtailed interstate commerce and potential development of the property along Sipsey Trail and connecting roads. It has made ambulance service to the remaining residences in the area a lengthy-er-than-need-be process.

If I remember correctly, residents were told there was a lawsuit pending against the county because of the bridge. The lawsuit was supposedly because, while the bridge was being repaired around the year 1999, it collapsed and a worker was killed. Supposedly, the case drug on and as years passed, road commissioners decided to not replace the bridge at all and completely close the road.

I urge everyone who once used this road, WOULD use this road, and residents in this area to re-new their thinking about the convenience it would add to the area, and how much it might re-vamp the area as well, as well as being a way to enhance dollars spent in Gattman.

I urge you to band together and rebuild the two-state relationship that has been called "Just Across The Line." If you don't care about your community, the politicians surely won't!

I agree with you ever since they closed the road it has cause a hard ship on the people living in the Sipsey Fork and Blaklock Road. having to travel all the way around thru Sipsey Fork or around by Sulligent, AL. WE were not giving a choice about closing our road. They should have rebuild our road and use that as a monument for the man that was killed, not build him a garden at Aberdeen that they are not even keeking up. We may not have alot in our community but we pay taxes just like everyone else.
