I like the idea of reading fiction while traveling. Or bigraphy even, much better than historical guides. There are a lot of cool sites up nowadays that can recommend good literature for your trip. One I stumbled apon recently is www.treklit.com Other travel oriented sites or even mega sites like Amazon tend to suggest books that read like maps. I'd much rather be involved in a good book set in my travel location.
