I was a "missileer" from 1964 until system deactivation in 1976? Was stationed at KI Sawyer and Wurtsmith, retired in 1989. The name "Hound Dog" came about because the missile had the capability to head for one target after launch, and then make a "dog-leg" turn to the primary target.

I was never called a "missileer" but I was Hound Dog Missile Mechanic at Blytheville AFB Ar from November of 1961 until September of 1966. Maybe I paid more attention in school at Chanute that you did. The explanation given for the name Hound Dog was simply that because of the short lead time from design to production, parts from several weapons systems were used. Parts that were already available in the supply stream and were proven. Like the Navy J52-P3 engine.
