If you were born in Africa you would naturally be a (as an example)say,Egyptian,or a Nigerian. Depending on what country of Africa you were born in.Africa being a Continent.
It is impossible to be born in two countries.IE Nigerian-American.Its either a country of Africa, as shown by example, or American, born in America, or the USA.
If you wanted to quote Continents,it would look like this.
I am an "African-North America".
It would be most interesting to find out what other examples or reasons you would call yourself African-American.
"I am an American". Sounds good to me.

When I was a child, the common term was Negro.
In the early 1960's, it was termed "a black person", if I am remembering correctly.
As for African American, I believe it is used as a respected discription of our fellow Americans.

I disagree. The terms you have listed all describe a separation based on skin color. They are inherently racist INCLUDING the term African American. The only way a country like the US works is if all citizens enjoy complete assimilation. Once we are naturalized we are all Americans period. I think separating the races with racial terms is the worst kind of racism. It makes people aware that they are different and special only because they are different.
We are all special because we are Americans, not because we are black white brown yellow or any other color. As long as these terms exist the only true Americans will be white and that is not right.
I am white. Am I more of an American because of that? Less? Now, I am the same as any other person and they are the same as me.

All men have overtime called Blacks ,Colored,Browns and Blacks. Blacks have used their terms that the white man have used and been shamed into banning the term as Blacks use it as a term of indearment.

Ask yourself this question if a white person is born in Africa and they come to the U.S. does that make them African American? So if you are born in America you just plain American. To me it does matter the color of the handle on the coffee pot it's still a coffee pot.

I was born in England in 1939,family went to Canada 1947. I was a English man with a flag the Union Jack. I at 8 years of age found out I was a white Man and was responsable for the Africans bought to North America ? I do not feel this a thing any person on this earth should be confronted with.
I feel the tribes in Africa over the Centuries sold off captured tribes into North Africa and around the world. This would be the beginning of the color thing. The Dutch traders did trade in slaves in Africa and moved out to North America. The fact their skin color was White has put the ownership on all white men. The same has been true in North American Indians,The french used the Indian population to scalp the English and we thought it to be a thing Indians did. The Slaves that left the plantations and married into the Indian population now made skin color a bigger issue. North America has a bigger Population of First Nations People that all White people are made to pay for Why is it this will never stop at us white People carrying other races because of our color. We can never call it racesizum but in fact it is.
