Ford was against labor unions. He felt they were too heavily influenced by leaders, who might be well-intentioned but inept, or corrupt.

He felt that union leaders had an incentive to perpetuate dissent, in order to maintain their own power.

Ford was right then and he'd be even more right today! Unions have become too powerful that today they control politics in this country.
