Infectious diseases brought from the Old World devastated local populations, who had formed no immunity to them. The smallpox epidemic was probably the most damaging to native populations.

The Columbian Exchange introduced a wider variety of domesticated plants and animals to the New World and therefore changed indigenous cultures. Native peoples became horsemen, for instance.
