It is named after Amerigo Vespucci, a fraud/falsifier, who, by publishing a sensational but false travel account, convinced German mapmakers that he actually beat Columbus to the New World.
The fraud was discovered, but the name America had already caught on and was accepted throughout Europe.

America was not named after Amerigo Vespucci. Another bit of misinformation that still hasn't been corrected in schools.
The name came from the term L'Merica: literally translated as "the Land to the West." I.e. west of EUROPE.
