Prior to the advent of films and television, English literary convention relied heavily on expository prose. Readers in the days before motion pictures were content to read long, detailed passages of narrative. Since the advent of films and television, readers have come to expect from literature what they are offered by motion pictures--action packed scenes based on dialogue and strong visual imagery.
