Guerilla activity abounded in the Western theater. These territories were not yet clearly defined and many of them were split on the issues key to the outbreak of the Civil War.

The Union Army held sway in much of the Western theater, particularly the areas of Kentucky and Missouri; during much of the war. There were few key Confederate victories there.
