I always thought that Freddie Green played on all of Count basie's recordings, but I've just noticed that the guitarist on the Album ''The Legend'' from 1961 (all written by Benny Carter)was Sam Herman (I have a vogue CD No600037). Is this correct?

Freddie Green appeared on nearly every Basie recording made between 1937 and 1987. There are a few exceptions. Freddie joined Basie in the spring of 1937; Basie recordings made in early 1937, or before, likely feature Claude Williams on guitar. In the early 1960s, guitarist Sam Herman substituted for Freddie on a Basie recording session while Freddie was on vacation. In the 1980s, Freddie did not appear on the recording "88 Basie Street" due to illness; no rhythm guitar was used, but Joe Pass was featured on some tracks.
