I have an original "Order No. 7" signed by 1st Lt. (later CW general) James A. Hardie whoi had been appointed Judge Advocate General of the court, datelined "Head Quarters, 1 Military Dept. Ft. Adams, R.I. May 14, 1853 notifying 13 officers that they are ordered to serve on a court martial "for the trial of 1st Lt. Romeyn B. Ayres, 3rd Regiment of Artillery. The order comes from Col. Gates. I can't find a reference to Ayres being court martialled. Can anyone tell me what this court martial was for? Many thanks. Neale
