If you are traveling on a budget and visiting more than one city, a backpack is a good idea. Since it fits on your back, it's easier to carry, and you won't have to manhandle it up flights of stairs.

Even wheelie suitcases can be a pain in the neck, especially when you are trying to roll them on sidewalks, and you'll still have to lift them constantly.
