There was a paper in the British Medical Journal in 1967 by Elkington and Huntsman entitled "The Talbot Fingers: a Study in Symphalangism.

They concluded that whilst an earlier publication claimed that John Talbot, 1st earl had the condition, the first firm evidence was for Charles, 2nd Earl. There is a spectacular and very deep pedigree from John Talbot through to living descendants who participated in the study.

You can get a brief summary and references on the OMIM website http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/omim/185800
