One day I was bringing recyclables to a depot and I love books so I was looking through some books that were given up for recycling, I was walking out through the door and I was unsermonousily handed a bible by someone I guess who thought I was one of the workers. As I love old books I just looked through this very large Volumous book of upwards of 1,223 page bible. I was so delighted with this old bible that I brought it on home.
It was lovingly but roughly kept together with restorers stitching as I am sure it is gradually falling to pieces.
The hard outer covering although faded has very ornate designs.
The inscription on the inside reads:
The
HOLY BIBLE
according to
THE AUTHORISED VERSION
containing the
OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS:
with original notes
AND PICTORIAL ILLUSTRATIONS.
BY JOHN KITTO, D.D., F.S.A.
Enlarged and Improved
BY REV. T.R. BIRKS, M.A.
VOL.1.
It has beautiful black and white pictorials with lots of notes to explain the background of that time. Seemingly John Kitto travelled throughout the biblical lands to better understand the bible teachings.
I just wondered if anyone has any information about this particular publication. I have no information regarding publishing dates or anything on this particular book.
Except for a pencilled inscription with owners details of Betty Grant Oxpark Cottage July 17th 1937
