In each production of Chicago I've seen(including the movie), Velma Kelly's actor has been ethnically ambiguous, at least to a degree. While Catherine Zeta-Jones is Welsh, a common ancestry in the U.S., she could be mistaken for Mestizo Hispanic or even partially Black. In a local production, Kelly was played by a spray tanned 20-something with a black wig. I've even seen a Velma Kelly of fully South Asian descent and even one who was a fair-skinned Black woman. I was just wondering if Velma Kelly was written as a non Anglo-Saxon character, but it just wasn't mentioned in dialogue, or if the actual Velma Kelly was darkly complected? or it's part of symbolism? or maybe even just a coincidence?
