In almost all the turbo-shaft engines I have known, there are one or two free turbines which extract the energy from the gases and produce horsepower. I wonder why there are not more free turbines...like 3 or 4. They will help convert more of the kinetic energy of the gases to mechanical power and improve efficiency. Is there any specific reason to limit the number of free turbines?
