China's draconian but necessary one child policy has succeeded in preventing a massive expansion in the population of the most populous country on earth.
India will soon surpass China in population. It seems unlikely, though, that India's government has the ability to adopt a similar measure. But they will soon face the same bleak prospect that China faced before the one child policy. It's hard to imagine what other solution exists to prevent the resource shortages they will soon face.

India's population will begin to level off once they modernize and industrialize. Industrialized nations do not have this problem because of the availability of birth control and other factors.

It may not level off soon enough. I think China's one child policy is too draconian. But a two child policy may be appropriate. Haven't Japan and Vietnam had a two child policy for some time?

Sterilization DOES WORK!!! Smarty.
The workable solution is forced sterilization at two children.
Oh, I know, that threatens what most men consider their manhood. But, there is NOTHING manly about causing the suffering brought on by overpopulation.

No you are quite wrong. In the past this law may have seemed draconian but today it is viewed in a somewhat different light. China has had an official 'one child policy' for some decades now but this is a very nuanced law.All kind of variables exist, but still they remain true to the spirit of its implementation. For instance if you belong to CCP, then you have cast your die, you can have only one child, but if you are a peasant, from the countryside if your first child is a girl, then you are allowed to have another baby.Perhaps owing to our greedy spending of the earth's resources we might see all countries adopting a 'one child policy, not just China.
