Maybe we here in america have a myopic view or limited knowledge of Flugel horn players outside our borders. Probably the greatest Jazz Flugelhorn player of his time was Ellsworth "Shake" Keane. Shake hails from a tiny island nation (St Vincent and the Grenadines, 100 miles west of Barbados) He started on Trumpet at about 9 but arriving in London in 1952 immediately picked up the Flugelhorn. See his recordings with Indo Jazz Fusions early 60's and with Kurt Edelhagen band in Germany. His physical mastery of the instrument to the highest register, his fat tonal quality and obviously his finger and lip mechanics put him in a class all by himself. This was NOT a trumpet player doubling on Flugel like most Trumpeters This was giant Flugelhorn maestro ( also a giant of a man) I guess we in america could only judge whats in the space between the atlantic and pacific coasts and the whole world doesnt exist for us. Do the research on Shake.
