Although a liberated society allows for the BDSM subculture it ignores the root cause of the triggered desire to be dominated.

I believe subs are created not born. Why, after studying the gay and lesbian community I've found without exception all participants have recollection of being attracted to their own sex as far back as they can remember. However a similar study of submissives the onset was unexpected and triggered by what they would consider an attack either physical or emotional. Individuals vary widely on how much abuse is required to make this switch. The brain's pain and pleasure centers overlap consequently the transition is readily available to the psyche when taxed to the individuals limits.

Many subs have experienced verbal or sexual abuse from family members at a very young age. They feel isolated and alone surrounded by family who never demonstrate love or support. These scars are carried througout their adult life never being resolved. Often depression and anxiety disorders are treated with conventional drug therapy but the root cause is never realized or acknowledged by the victim. When these troubled personalities are confronted in their adult life with the pain of humiliation or physical abuse the brain defends itself by triggering an endorphen release causing an unexpected but satifying experience. Now instead of fearing these encounters the individual seeks new ways of experiencing these in a controlled environment. Society tends to ignore these deep psychological issues as the submissive is acting on free will and really enjoys these encounters. Note: There has been little research or enough candidates to determine if this is a treatable psychosis. The BDSM subculture is a perfect place to find safety and gratification.

Beginning submissives usually will join an on-line community to find suitable partners. Some seek gratification from the person who triggered the initial onset. The formalization of the process, e.g. verbal or written contracts, safe words or signals, seductive clothing, toys, etc. are recognized as part of the play or scene. An established Master in the BDSM community will usually have a stable of willing subs to choose from.

On rare occasions the D/s relationship develops into something more for one or both. The term love is used and can be real to either or a fantasy the mind chooses to validate his or her needs. Maintaining these close ties is difficult due to the subculture's dependency on new experiences with others. Although some have become jaded by the experience and continue to feel love for the other even if their partner is currently involved with another Master or sub.

Submissives will not seek treatment for their sudden desire for pain or subjucation. They have found enjoyment where they may have had none before. Considering this why would they give this up if given a choice to go back and find more suffering of one kind or another. Instead they seek Masters who exploit their condition as they are sure they are the only ones who'll understand them.

As with drug users the high is harder to achieve unless more dangerous and addictive chemicals are used. The experienced sub is no longer able to achieve the high desired by minimal interaction. More pain or subjucation is required putting themselves at greater risk for physical or psychological damage. Generally many subs are seeking the one Master who'll meet their needs, except their love and in return feel loved. This is the one area that persons outside the subculture have in common. We all want to feel loved and to give love.
