After the abolition of slavery in the US, racial discrimination became codified in many states with the gradual introduction of Jim Crow laws. These laws restricted the rights of black citizens in almost all areas of life, going to great length to keep them separated from whites.

Racial segregation began in the 1870s and lasted until the 1960s. By 1970, racial segregation was illegal in schools, hospitals, businesses and the military; separate bathrooms, theater seats, and bus seats had disappeared.
