First trip to find newspaper articles didn't pan out. Went to Grove, Oklahoma Public Library, where they have very helpful staff. Checked out the microfilm of Grove Sun from April to July 1961 and didn't find any references to the McDonald Territory incident. I was a little disappointed.
There had been suggestions that the secession attempt was a news item back in 1961, and it had made the AP wire. Delaware County was the other county that had been suggested as a possible joiner in the secession attempt, along with Benton County, Arkansas, to form a new state. If it had went through the headquarters of Wal-Mart would be in McDonald Territory! I wonder what Sam would have thought of that? He was around back then, by the way.
