Square frame heel configuration

Background. 36 gun frigate, built 1803

Having researched through Goodwin, Steel, NMM drawings and a number of other sources I am in a quandry. Some drawings show the toe of the heel of a SQUARE frame coming to a sharp edge and sitting flat against the side of the rising wood atop the keel. There is an argument against the frames coming to a point in this fashion due to susceptability to dry or damp rot. The alternative is to have a flat toe, and a narrow (perhaps 1.5") shelf or pocket on both sides of the rising wood to accept this flat toe. This flat toe makes sense but I cannot find a single contemporary drawing or written description showing this.

If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative. It has been a six week search by four of us without a conclusive result thus far.

Thank you
Allan
