The shape of the Sun's Gravity Well ?

If the Sun's mass creates a 'well' in the space time fabric, and the planets are moving inside this "well', would not their orbits be circles. since the distortion must be uniform around the Sun's circumference?
Yet we have known since Newton's time that the planets move in elip[tical paths?
