After the Drapers of California, Charles Steen was the second largest importer of Spanish bred Arabian horses in the United States. From his estate, Wayne Newton purchased some of his Spanish-bred Arabian mares (De Washoe)and bred them to his Polish-bred stallions resulting in very successful crosses that were top winners in the Arabian show ring and bringing high dollar sales. The stallion, Barich De Washoe, bred by Mr. Steen and owned by William Hughes of Chino, California was an extremely successful producer in California with most of his progeny highly sought after as show horses and breeding stock.
