There are considerations other than how poisonous a snake is to decide how dangerous it is. The most dangerous snake in the world is naja naja (common cobra) because it lives where people live and kills more than any other snake. The most poisonous is probably the Australian Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) although the New Guinea Taipan and Western Taipan may be more poisonous as they are only recently separated taxa. The Australian Coastal Taipan is next and after that several other terrestrial Australian snakes including the tiger snake, several species of death adder, common brown snakes, king brown snakes and a few more.

It must also be noted , the data is based on the LD50 for mice. That is, given a certain weight of mouse, what dose of venom is required to give the mouse a 50/50 chance of survival (or death).

The lethal dose for humans may be different but there seems to be a severe lack of human volunteers to experiment with.

In any case, if you are bitten by a Taipan, your chance of survival is extremely small if you are very close to a hospital with the requied antivenene. With the half a dozen most deadly Australian snakes, its like deciding if you want to be run over by a bulldozer or a tank.
