Andromeda is the wife of Perseus prince of Argos. One myth about Andromeda is found in Greek mythology. Andromeda's mother, Queen Cassiopeia, bragged that she was prettier than the sea nymphs. The nymphs complained to Poseidon, who in turn sent a monster to destroy her land. The queen and her husband, King Cepheus, were told to sacrifice their daughter to save the country.
Andromeda was chained to a cliff for the monster, called Cetus. Just as the monster was ready to bite down on the maiden, Perseus rescued her. Perseus and Andromeda were put in the sky along with Cepheus, Cassiopeia and Cetus.

If you're still interested, Andromeda is dealt with thoroughly in Robert Graves' two-volume work "The Greek Myths" (Penguin).
Incidentally, The sea monster in the 1981 film Clash of the Titans is called the Kraken. However, it is portrayed as a giant, four-armed humanoid with scales and a long fishtail instead of legs. In the film, Perseus uses the decapitated head of Medusa to turn the Kraken into stone to prevent it from ravaging the city of Joppa and killing the sacrificial Andromeda.
In Greek mythology the monster Perseus defeated was called Ceto, which is depicted by the constellation of Cetus (usually depicted as a whale, whose systematic name is Cetacean, also deriving from Ceto). (Wikipedia)
