General Joe Hooker was one. He lost to a much smaller force at Chancellorsville...to Lee and Stonewall Jackson. It was Lee's masterpiece and he shouldn't have won it except, for Hooker's lack of generalship...he lost his nerve to Jackson & Lee. Losing the battle made him a key figure.
