As soon as she reached freedom in Philadelphia, Tubman began thinking of her family. She wanted them to be free as well.

When Tubman learned that her niece Kessian was to be sold, in 1850, she journeyed back to the land of her enslavement to help Kessiah and her husband and children escape to freedom in the north.
