The U.S. did not have strong alliances with either side at the start of the war.

There was even a strong movement inside the U.S. to enter the war on the side of the Germans/Austrians due to a large population of German immigrants.

The U.S. only entered the war after a large number of civilians were killed in the sinking of the passenger ship the Lusitania which was sunk by a German U-Boat. It is not clear whether the U.S. would ever have entered the war if this event had not occurred.
