I am presently building a leather skin boat woven from hazel and sewn together with rawhide string, I want to reinact the arrival of turkish farmers to irish shores over 5ooo years ago. the frame of the boat is woven from 800 hazel rods and reinforced with ash poles from the in side it is 34foot long and two and a half tonne when complete. The sails are to be woven using willow rods on a series of rawhide belts, my question because the sail may be more combersome to hoist is their an advantage to using the lateen style for this reason.
