2010–11 Chelsea F.C. season
Encyclopedia
The 2010–11 season is Chelsea Football Club
's 96th competitive season, 19th consecutive season in the Premier League, and 105th year in existence as a football club. They went into the Premier League as the defending champions, but failed to retain it.
The season was managed by their 2009–10 Double-winning manager Carlo Ancelotti
, but his association with the club would be broken off, having been sacked at the end of this season. Chelsea started off the season with an amazing five-consecutive-wins run in the Premier League, which was eventually halted by Man City
when City skipper Carlos Tevez
scored to lead his side into a 1–0 triumph over the defending champions. Chelsea were leading the Premier League table for almost half a season, before Manchester United
overtook them when they went through their worst run in the club's history during the winter saga. Altogether in the Premier League, they won 21 games, drew 8 and lost 9. They conceded the least amount of goals compared to all the other clubs, sharing this with the club which first beat them, Manchester City
.
In January 2011, on the last day of the transfer window, Chelsea bought Fernando Torres
for a club-record-breaking and British-record-breaking fee of £50 million from Liverpool
. They also bought defender David Luiz
from Benfica for a fee reportedly to be £21 million. However, Torres would not repay the club in form of goals for another 903 minutes until he scored against West Ham
, which marked the start of Chelsea's final chance of staging the Premier League's best comeback. The comeback was destroyed by a 2-1 away loss to United
, in which Javier Hernández and Nemanja Vidić
scored.
