The Admiralty & Maritime Law Committee (AMLC) is a General Committee within the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section
of the American Bar Association
.
The AMLC is the only "wet" committee within the entire ABA. As such, it is the source for articles, books, and continuing legal education relating to admiralty practice. The members of the AMLC include practicing attorneys, law students, professors, insurance professionals, and in-house counsel around the world.
The Deepwater Horizon explosion/oil spill and related legal issues are the focus of a May 19, 2011, CLE at the TIPS Spring CLE and Leadership Forum in Amelia Island. Some of these issues were also addressed in the July 2010 webinar presented with the TIPS Toxic Torts and Environmental Law Committee.
In recent years, the AMLC has become involved in the legislative process. Joseph Kulesa (Chair, 2008–2009) of the AMLC drafted the Report and Recommendation adopted by the ABA House of Delegates, urging the U.S. Senate to ratify the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea, also known as the Rotterdam Rules
. The AMLC worked with the Maritime Law Association (MLA) and the ABA's International Law Section, both of which cosponsored the resolution with TIPS.
The AMLC also provides Continuing Legal Education
(CLE) programs and various publications, both to members and to non-members. A Recreational Boating Law book is currently in the works and planned for 2011 release. Michael Daly (Chair, 2009–2010) is organizing and editing the book, with several committee members co-authoring.

Law Student Writing Competition Winners
Admiralty and Maritime Law can be an intimidating area for new attorneys. As one way of connecting experienced practitioners with lawyers-to-be, the AMLC sponsors an annual law student writing competition, which recognizes law student authors of original, scholarly pieces on admiralty and maritime law topics. The winning piece is published in the committee newsletter, and the author receives $500 and up to $500 reimbursement for attending a TIPS section meeting. The 2012 deadline is April 6, 2012.Past winners:
