, and Beatrix, Countess Széchenyi de Sárvár-Felsővidék. His siblings are Gloria, Princess of Thurn and Taxis
, also known as Princess TNT (b. 1960), Maya Flick (b. 1958), and Carl-Alban of Schönburg (born 2 February 1966 - Lomé, Togo), as well as Anabel Maya-Felicitas, from his father's second marriage, to Ursula Zwicker. Since the death of his father in 1998, he has been the head of the comital branch of the former sovereign aristocratic house of Schönburg. As such, he is entitled to the predicate Illustrious Highness
.
His father's profession as a journalist and foreign correspondent took the family to Togo and later to Somalia, from 1965-1970. The family returned to Germany in 1970, and resided in Meckenheim, in the Rhineland. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, his father reclaimed the family's possessions in Saxony.
