Robert H. Lurie graduated from University of Michigan
with a BSE in Industrial and Operations Engineering in 1964 and a MSE in 1966. While studying at the University of Michigan, he and Sam Zell began a real-estate management company, which expanded into two large apartment and office property real estate investment trusts - Equity Residential Properties Trust and Equity Office Properties Trust. The Ann and Robert H. Lurie Family Foundation has endowed the Robert H. Lurie Engineering Center and the Lurie Tower
at the University of Michigan.
His widow, Ann, a registered nurse, donated money to the Cancer Center at Northwestern University
which now bears the Lurie name. Ann Lurie has also committed $100 million to the new Children's Memorial Hospital
and endowed $10 million for upkeep of the Lurie Garden
at Chicago's Millennium Park.
Robert Lurie died from colon cancer in 1990 at the age of 48.
