Ishara was born in Bharwain (Chintpurni
), in Una, Himachal Pradesh
, India. In his early life, he had fled his home to work in the Bomabay film industry. Over the time, he became a film director and has a good number of movies to his credit. He married actress Rihana Sultan. He is also known as the bold face of Hindi cinema.
He discovered Bollywood actress, Parveen Babi
at Ahmedabad University. His first mainstream film, Insaaf Ka Mandir, starred actor Tarun Bose
and Aruna Irani
.
He brought cricketer of 70s, Salim Durrani in to the films and made Charitra where he introduced Parveen Bobby also. He gave chances to many so new comers including Danny, Parveen Bobby, Rakesh Pandey, Rehana Sultana, Vijay Arora, Jaya Bhaduri, Amitabh Bachchan, Reena Roy, Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Kiran and Raza Murad.
He always tackled burning issues in his films. He wrote himself for his films and his thought provoking stories always shook the audience. Sharp dialogues in his films still can penetrate mind and understanding of the audience. Music has been an important element in his thought provoking off beat films and Sapan Jagmohan provided music for most of his films and Mukesh sang some of his beautiful songs in his films. Two of the songs, Mein to Har Mod par, and ek Hasrat thee kee anchal ko pyar mile can give clue about the music in his films. He signed Bappi Lahiri, then a new composer, also in few of his films. Some of his films, for the bold themes he chose, have become important parts of history of Hindi cinema.
