. In December 2009 it was announced by the network, which was formerly called TQS, that instead of a new season of Loft Story, it would explore the original format of Big Brother.

The host is TV presenter Chéli Sauvé-Castonguay and will last 63 days. The season launched on March 14, 2010 with fifteen housemates entering the house on Day 1. This series is the first international version to follow the American format in which the game is played internally, but with minor differences.

Aside from the main show, there is an accompanying show that airs every Sunday on V. The show is hosted by journalist Pascale Levesque. The winner of Loft Story: La Revanche, Sébastien Tremblay, blogs daily about the show on its official website.

Format

Big Brother Quebec loosely follows the format of the American version in that the public do not decide who to evict; only the housemates decide who will stay and who will go. However, there are slight differences:

Numéro 1

The Numéro 1 (English
English language
English is a West Germanic language that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and spread into what was to become south-east Scotland under the influence of the Anglian medieval kingdom of Northumbria...

: Number 1) is similar to the Head of Household position in the American version. Numéro 1 is exempt from eviction and enjoys certain luxuries. They also must nominate two housemates for eviction.

Numéro 2

The Numéro 2 (English: Number 2) is a unique feature to Big Brother Quebec. Numéro 1 chooses a second person to become Numéro 2. This person also is immune from eviction and enjoys certain luxuries as well. In addition, Numéro 2 must choose a third housemate to nominate for eviction.

Pouvoir de Véto

The Pouvoir de Véto (English: Power of Veto) works similarly to the Power of Veto in the US, in that the winner may use it to save a nominee, however, unlike the American version, the Veto winner decides on a replacement nominee. Sometimes, there may be two Vetos up for grabs instead of the normal one available to win.

Food Competitions

Food competitions are similar to the current Have and Have Not competitions in the US. The winners receive desired food items, such as steak, bread, vegetables, and dairy, while the losers dine on slop.

Evictions

Unlike the American version, there are three nominated housemates instead of two. As well, the nominated housemates remain in a separate room for the results of the vote, instead of sitting in designated chairs in the living room. Finally, all housemates except Numéro 1 vote to evict, unlike the US, where the two nominees cannot vote, and the HoH votes only in a tiebreaker situation. There are exceptions to this, however; the public on occasion has the opportunity to evict a housemate.

Grenade

Used in other international formats like the Australian version, the Grenade is used by the newly evicted housemate to throw at any housemate of their choice. The Grenade has different powers and these powers change every week. One such power is the ability to automatically put a housemate up for eviction the following week; if that happens, Numéro 1 for the upcoming week will only nominate one person.

Finale

The finale of Big Brother is completely different from the American version. Several housemates (six in the first season) remain in the house on the final, unlike 2 or 3 in the American version. As well, a certain number of evicted housemates do not form a jury to decide on a winner; like the original format

, the viewing public decides on the winner.

  • :Following her eviction, Sandra used the power of the Grenade to nominate Josée. Because of this, Numéro 1 Fey only nominated one housemate for eviction.
  • :Following his eviction, Andy used the power of the Grenade to put Vickie in 24-hour confinement.
  • :Fey, with 7 of 11 votes, was supposed to be evicted. But as the result of the group challenge, she was spared from eviction and nobody was evicted that week.
  • :During week 4, there were two vetos won. The first one was won by Vincent and the second by Lyvia. However, both of the vetos were unused.
  • :Following a vote to decide the use of the Grenade, it was decided that the public would vote to evict instead of the housemates. Therefore, nobody could vote for someone to evict in Week 5.
  • : The power of the Grenade in week five was that the evicted housemate could grant immunity to 5 people of their choice. As Marie-Élaine was this housemate, she gave immunity to Christian, Jean, Vickie, Vincent and Vinny.
  • :Vickie, as Numéro 1, had to vote to break a tie on Day 42.
  • :Following a vote to decide the use of the Grenade, it was decided that the public would vote to evict instead of the housemates for the remaining weeks.
  • :Following week seven's eviction, Big Brother announced that the theme of the following week would be the Pressure. Thus, two weeks would be compressed in only one. So two evictions would take place: one eviction would be made by the housemates, and the other one would be made via a public vote.
  • :Following his eviction, Jonathan used the power of the Grenade to nominate Christian.
  • :Following week eight's eviction, Big Brother announced that all the housemates would vote for the person who deserves the least to win. That person won't be able to win the grand prize. However, during the week, guests were awarded points during different challenges. The person who collected the most points would receive immunity and thus is excluded from the disability to win voting.
  • : Christian collected the most points during the challenges and he was immune. Then, all the housemates casted their vote for the disabilty to win vote. The results were: Josée 7 votes, Jean 5 votes and Vinny 3 votes. Thus Josée was excluded from the final vote.
