Burton and Garran Hall was originally established as two separate Halls in 1965, and each Hall had separate administration. Both Halls combined in 1983 to form a single residential college.

. Garran also served on the Council of The Australian National University from 1946 to 1951 and became the University’s first graduate when he was awarded an honorary law doctorate.
Burton Hall, also established in 1965, was named after Professor Herbert Burton CBE, a Rhodes Scholar who held numerous university roles. In 1949, Burton was appointed Principal and Professor of Economic History at Canberra University College. Burton was made Principal of the School of General Studies at the Australian National University in 1960, a position he retained until his retirement in 1965. Burton Hall was a beneficiary of Professor Burton’s will, which included a substantial bequest for the provision of student bursaries. The two Halls combined in 1983 to form Burton and Garran Hall.

Leadership Team
The student leadership team includes 16 Senior Residential Scholars(SRs), 9 Academic Schoalars, 5 Canteen Scholars, 2 IT Scholars, 2 Transport scholars and 2 Sexuality officers.BAGMA
The Residents Committee are responsible for social activities throughout the college hall. Each position is an elected position where the successful candidate manages their respective portfolio in the year following their election. The committee also includes the Executive Committee which consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The portfolios traditionally include, Arts Representative, Sports Representative, Social Sports Representative, International Representative, Post-Graduate Representative, Communications Representative and Cultural Representative. As of 2010, the BAGMA will include a Radio Representative, following the creation of the 24 hour B&G Radio.Elections for these positions are held annually in October, and a successful candidate will take control of their portfolio the following year.
