A Republican, Anderson first ran for lieutenant governor of Minnesota in 1938 with gubernatorial candidate Harold Stassen

. He became the state's 31st lieutenant governor at only 26 years old. He was reelected in 1940. He again ran for lieutenant governor in 1944, and was elected the state's 34th lieutenant governor. He was reelected in 1946, 1948 and 1950.

In September 1951, Anderson became governor when Luther Youngdahl
