Cala d'Or
Encyclopedia
Cala d'Or is a holiday resort
on the east coast of Majorca consisting of three principal areas: the town centre of Cala d'Or, Cala Egos and Cala Ferrera. It offers many small, fine sandy beaches including Cala Gran, Cala d'Or, Cala Egos, Cala Es Forti, Cala Serena and Cala Esmeralda. A mini 'road train' regularly runs for holidaymakers between different parts of the resort and the beaches. The town centre is very lively in the summer months but much more low key than the larger and more populated resorts in Majorca. The pedestrianised area offers a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants and a wide selection of international cuisine. Also popular is the marina area which welcomes exclusive yachts and chartered boats throughout the year, offering some of the best protection from storms in the whole of Majorca, although the entrance can be very tight for turning. The marina is also near restaurants and bars.
The majority of buildings in Cala d'Or are painted in traditional Mediterranean white. The outskirts of the settlement are home to quiet holiday villas.
Cala d'Or is approximately 45 minutes from Palma airport
but suffers very little from through traffic. The nearest major town to Cala d'Or is Santanyi
which lies further inland. The pretty fishing port of Porto Petro is only a five minute journey by car and can also be reached by the mini train.
The resorts of Cala D'or and Cala Egos are in the municipality of Santanyi in the south east of Majorca and these resorts are very popular with families or couples from all over Europe.
Cala D'or was one of the first major tourist resorts in Mallorca. The buildings were themed on Ibiza, small pretty white-washed villas, apartments and houses and even the hotels had to stick rigidly with this theme.
Over the years this area has grown in size but has suffered since the 'credit crisis' due to a fall in demand for holidays. Many of the hotels in Cala D'Or & Cala Egos offer all-inclusive holidays but there are still apartment holidays and private apartments & villas for rent if self-catering is a choice for you.
