was held on 2 August, the 2nd last day of the Olympics on a 11,2 km course. The course was circled seventeen times, so the total length of the competition was 190,4 km.

There were 154 entries from 31 nations and 112 participants from 30 nations. Of the 112 starters 52 rode the distance to the end. Out of 27 teams only 13 completed the course. Losses by the way were due less to the heat and punctures than to the stiff pace set from the beginning and the ruling by the commissaire
