The premiere drew over 13 million viewers, the biggest summer debut ever for an American reality series. The second week climbed to 15 million viewers, and the show climbed to No. 1 in the summer 2005 TV season ratings, where it remained for the remainder of the season. The season finale aired July 6, 2005.

- Week 1: There was a three-way tie for the highest scoring couples: Joey & Ashly, John & Charlotte, and Rachel & Jonathan who all got 20/30 from the judges. Kelly & Alec were at the bottom with 13/30. There was no elimination this week.
- Week 2: For the second week in a row, John & Charlotte were at the top of the judges board with 26/30. Evander & Edyta were at the bottom with 14/30. Week 1 and Week 2 scores were combined and John & Charlotte were at the top with 46/60. However, Kelly & Alec were at the bottom of the leaderboard with 30/60 despite having Evander & Edyta at the bottom this week. But, neither Kelly & Alec nor Evander & Edyta were in the bottom two. Rachel & Jonathan were shockingly in the bottom two despite being 14 points from the bottom. Also in the bottom two were Trista & Louis who were shockingly eliminated.
- Week 3: Rachel & Jonathan were at the top of the leaderboard with 26/30 for their Tango. Evander & Edyta were at the bottom with 13/30 for their Jive. Joey & Ashly were the last to be called safe, and Evander & Edyta were eliminated.
- Week 4: Kelly & Alec kept improving their scores this week all the way to the top with 26/30 for their Samba. Joey & Ashly were at the bottom with 20/30 also for their Samba. All the couples also danced a group Viennese Waltz which was not scored. Rachel & Jonathan and John & Charlotte were in the bottom two and Rachel & Jonathan were shockingly eliminated despite being second on the judges leaderboard.
- Week 5: This week, all the couples danced two dances which were both scored. John & Charlotte got a 27/30 for both their dances giving them 54/60 and on top of the leaderboard. Kelly & Alec were in the middle with 47/60. Joey & Ashly were at the bottom with 45/60. Kelly & Alec and Joey & Ashly were in the bottom two and Joey & Ashly were eliminated as the third place couple. (Season 7) became third place couples after McIntyre. - Week 6: In the finals, John & Charlotte were in the lead with 27/30 for their favorite dance of the season which was a Quickstep. Kelly & Alec got a 25/30 for their Samba putting them behind early. However, during the Freestyle round, John & Charlotte got a 27/30 again and Kelly & Alec got a 30/30. The only perfect score of the season. Kelly & Alec finished with 55/60 while John & Charlotte finished with 54/60. Kelly & Alec ended up winning over heavily favored John & Charlotte.
- Week 7, Dance-Off: In a rematch of the original finals, Kelly & Alec were set to defend their title against John & Charlotte. For the first round, they both danced an unlearned Latin dance. Kelly & Alec went first and received a 25/30 for their Cha-cha-cha. John & Charlotte received a 22/30 for their Rumba. But things switched in the ballroom round. Kelly & Alec received a 24/30 for their Quickstep. But, John & Charlotte received their only perfect score and the second one of the competition for their Waltz. Then they both danced Freestyle. Both received 25/30 from the judges. Due to those scores, John & Charlotte won with 77/90 and Kelly & Alec with 74/90.
